| Detail:
Tow of the tug JAMES H. MARTIN in the "Big Storm" of 1913. MARTIN became disabled, left her in the lee of the island, where she was eventually overwhelmed and sunk. A note in a bottle from a passenger said MARTIN "left us and never even said good-bye!" Master: Capt. Alex Larson(d). Wreckage was found in 1984 near Poverty Island.Converted from prop to 4-mast schooner in 1884. See prop OREGON.Driven ashore on Presque Isle, Lake Superior, in Oct, 1887, released, 1888, rebuilt, 1889. Capt. J. Reid raised her from this position by the unusual method of jacking a frame with 200 air-filled kerosene barrels down to the wreck and securing it, then releasing the jacks.Major repairs in 1864She was 846 t. om as a propeller.Image from GLMD |
